How Soon Can I Return to Work or Exercise After Endometriosis Surgery?
Recovery after endometriosis surgery varies from person to person. Your timeline will depend on several factors, including the extent of your procedure, your overall health, and the nature of the work or physical activity you’re planning to resume. While healing is personal, there are general guidelines to help you understand what to expect.
Returning to Work After Surgery
For patients undergoing minimally invasive laparoscopic excision surgery, most can return to light desk work within 1 to 2 weeks. However, if your job involves physical labor, lifting, or being on your feet for extended periods, you may need closer to 4 to 6 weeks before returning to full duties.
Even if you’re feeling better on the outside, internal healing takes longer. It’s important not to rush your recovery—doing so can increase the risk of setbacks or complications.
Getting Back to Exercise
Gentle walking is encouraged just a few days after surgery to promote circulation and reduce the risk of complications like blood clots. However, more strenuous activities—such as running, weightlifting, cycling, or core workouts—should be avoided for at least 4 to 6 weeks.
Always wait for clearance from your surgeon before resuming high-impact exercise. Everyone’s recovery is different, and pushing too hard too soon can delay healing.
Listen to Your Body and Your Surgeon
Your body will give you signs—fatigue, soreness, swelling—if you’re doing too much. Trust those cues and follow your surgeon’s advice to ensure a smooth and safe recovery. Rest is a key part of healing.
