Inspiration, Innovation, and What Comes Next: Wrapping Up Day 3 of The Endometriosis Summit

Wow. What an absolutely incredible event.

As we close out Day 3 of The Endometriosis Summit, we are leaving with an immense sense of gratitude and renewed clinical focus. Coming to this conference every single year is a profound reminder of why we do what we do. To be in a room packed with the world’s best educators, surgeons, advocates, and patients is nothing short of inspiring.

The conversations had over these last three days are actively pushing the needle forward in women’s healthcare. Here is a look at the major highlights from our final day, the recurring themes of the weekend, and a hint at what is coming next for Endometriosis Surgical Specialists International (ESSI).

Advocacy Meets Action: The Funding Conversation

Awareness is the first step, but funding is the engine of change. One of the most vital discussions of Day 3 centered on the state of endometriosis research and clinical funding, led by Shannon Cohn, the visionary director of the groundbreaking documentary Below the Belt.

For too long, endometriosis has been woefully underfunded on a federal and institutional level compared to diseases with similar economic and quality-of-life burdens. Shannon’s insights perfectly highlighted how the grassroots advocacy of this community is finally forcing the hands of policymakers. We are entering an era where legislative pushes and private investments will finally begin to match the severity of the disease.

A Masterclass in Thoracic Endometriosis

One of the absolute standout moments of the entire weekend was an incredibly insightful presentation on Thoracic Endometriosis by Dr. Francesco Di Chiara.

Extra-pelvic endometriosis—specifically disease that reaches the diaphragm, lungs, and thoracic cavity—is one of the most complex and misdiagnosed presentations of this illness. Dr. Di Chiara broke down the biology of the disease, the nuances of an accurate diagnosis, and the elite multidisciplinary surgical treatment required to eradicate it.

It is rare to see an entire room of seasoned specialists and patients simultaneously pull out their phones to record a lecture, but that is exactly what happened. It was a masterclass in advanced disease pathology.

The Adenomyosis Vanguard

You cannot talk about comprehensive pelvic pain and fertility care without addressing the uterus itself. Day 3 featured a heavy-hitting panel and specialized presentations on Adenomyosis, featuring Dr. Chuck Miller, our own Dr. Andrea Vidali, and Dr. Igor Chiminacio.

The conversation reinforced the urgent need to move past the outdated notion that a hysterectomy is the only valid treatment for a bulky, bleeding, adenomyotic uterus. By discussing advanced diagnostic imaging and uterine-sparing surgical innovations (like the Microwave Ablation technique Dr. Vidali demonstrated on Day 1), this panel proved that patients who wish to preserve their fertility finally have highly effective, modern options.

The Big Theme: Pelvic Congestion and Nerve Blocks

As the weekend progressed, a massive, recurring clinical theme began to dominate the side conversations and Q&A sessions: the nervous system and pelvic vasculature.

As we frequently say at ESSI, pelvic pain is rarely just one thing. Even when expert excision removes the endometriosis, patients can still suffer from overlapping pain generators. This year, the summit heavily focused on the critical role of Pelvic Congestion Syndrome (PCS)—varicose veins in the pelvis that cause chronic, heavy aching—and the therapeutic use of Nerve Blocks to calm a hyper-reactive, central nervous system.

Understanding the intersection of endometriosis lesions, engorged pelvic veins, and entrapped nerves is the absolute cutting edge of chronic pain management.
